“I play polo.”
“Oh, like water polo?”
“No, like on horses.”
“What?! I’ve never met anyone who plays polo! That’s crazy! I didn’t even know that was a thing!”
This is a conversation I find myself a part of almost every day. It never ceases to amaze me how little people know about the sport of polo when it takes up such a massive part of my own life. This is something I am determined to change, especially amongst young women (as polo is on of the fastest growing women’s sports in the US). I want to bring awareness about this incredible sport and its accessibility to those who either know little about it or think it impossible for them to be a part of it. There is, of course, a stigma around the lifestyle of a polo player, being very wealthy, possibly Royalty, and overly snooty. But this is simply not true. My experience with polo is quite the opposite. It includes long, hot, sweaty, summer days and being at the barn early in the morning to feed. Staying there all day and riding at least 5 horses; tacking and wrapping endless legs, laughing and chatting with barn friends, asados over an open fire as the sun sets; then turning the horses out into their pastures for the night after a 12 hour day. Finally driving an hour back home, covered head to toe in dirt and too tired to shower. Waking up and doing the exact same thing all over again the next day. This is my version of polo. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.
It’s difficult to put into words the joy and fulfillment that this sport brings me because it is truly a spiritual endeavor. And that comes mainly from working with those majestic, magical creatures - horses. Horses have been a part of my soul since I was about two years old and I sat on a pony for the first time. I started taking riding lessons when I was six years old and started competing in Hunter/Jumpers shortly thereafter. I was obsessed - yes, I was THAT girl. Drawing horses in notebooks at school, setting up jumps in my backyard with buckets and brooms and making my non-horse friends (and dogs) jump over them; watching every horse movie/TV show/reading every horse book I could get my hands on; frequently day dreaming about the array of horses I would own one day.
I found polo at the age of 12 when I started playing on the Interscholastic team at Valley Forge Military Academy. I was instantly hooked. I played at Brandywine Polo Academy in PA for the rest of my Interscholastic career. I then went on to play Intercollegiate polo at Southern Methodist University under the coaching of the famous Tom Goodspeed. Tom took my arena polo to the next level and I am so grateful to have been taught by him. In 2014, I captained my team to win the Intercollegiate Central Regional Tournament. We went on to compete in the Intercollegiate National Finals and placed third in the nation. I was named to the All-Star team. I have since played in tournaments across the US, including the Bentley Polo Classic (the largest polo event in the US with over 13,000 spectators) where I was named MVP of the Women’s Sunset Match.
Today, I am living in Los Angeles, working at HYT Polo and playing at the Will Rogers Polo Club. I am following my dream - working as an actress and model. I want to play roles like Wonder Woman and Laura Croft, where I get to be a lady in action! My polo skills have done nothing but help me pursue my dream by not only keeping me in shape and providing me with an alternate source of income, but also by being an escape and healthy outlet from the struggles of being an artist. I am so lucky to have this sport in my life. I have recently started coaching a kid’s polo team at HYT polo in Burbank, CA. I love teaching kids and sharing my love for the sport and seeing them grow in their own journey towards becoming a polo player. My goal is to inspire people to fervently follow their dreams. It’s as simple as that. I hope to be a beacon to other people to find their inner badassery - whether that be through horses and polo, through acting or other art forms, or through any hobby that brings them joy. I want to live my life to the fullest. I want to lift up those around me so that they, too, can experience the magic that this life has to offer us. We simply need to take the reins and go for it!
